The key is to remember that advertising is a BRIEF opportunity to capture a prospect’s attention. When you are driving down the highway, that billboard has to capture your attention in about 2.3 seconds. When you are flipping through direct mail, there is even less time. When scrolling through emails and posts on social media, your eye is quickly scanning and deleting or scrolling. Banner ads that you see on web sites … same story. If that headline doesn’t quickly grab your attention, your eyes are on to the next line,  image, or post.

When creating your headlines, put yourself in that same position and ask, “Would this headline grab my attention?”. Don’t ask, “Do I believe in my company?” because it doesn’t matter. Ask, “Would this headline capture my prospect’s attention and make me want to click?” You must be brutally honest. If you can’t say “YES”, try again.

Now, when I say “headline” I mean a literal headline like you would write at the top of your ad, your capture page, your sales letter, and your banner ads. That headline must grab the reader’s attention and make them want to click to learn more.

Now, here is where things get interesting. There is no one “right” way to write headlines that sell. There are actually a number of approaches you can use. Let’s look at a few examples:

The Simple and Direct Approach This is literally about making a simple and direct appeal to your readers. Examples include:

  • The Ultimate Tax Shelter
  • FREE subscription to BlogMaster

There is no mystery as to what the offers are. Anyone interested in saving money on silk blouses, taking advantage of a tax shelter, or interested in a free subscription to blogmaster is going to click out of sheer interest in the offer being made.

State The Benefit Let readers know what they can expect from you by making it your headline. Examples include:

Show Them How To This is a great approach to show prospects how you can help them. Examples include:
