Too often, Americans are hear tragic stories of gun violence that anti-gun advocates use to push for gun control. Unfortunately, stories that detail the use of guns in self-defense cases very rarely get any media attention, leaving some skeptics to believe that the Second Amendment may be an antiquated right.
But a recent case out of Dallas, Texas highlights the value of Americans’ right to bear arms. When 71-year old Ronnie Lummus and his wife were exiting a grocery story on Tuesday night, they were met by an unidentified man who snatched a necklace right from the neck of Lummus’ wife.
Unbeknownst to the suspect, however, Lummus was carrying a handgun, which he immediately used to defend his wife and himself. The suspect was fatally wounded while trying to leave the scene.
Lummus’ case will be referred to a Texas grand jury, but he has not been charged with a crime, as he is a law-abiding concealed carry permit holder.
While it is unfortunate that the suspect met with an untimely death because of his own bad choices, it is imperative that the American people maintain their right to self-defense. According to Lummus, he and his wife felt threatened during the encounter.
Study after study reveals that as an increase in the number of Americans with concealed carry permits is seen, so too is a decrease in the percentage of violent crimes.
A study conducted by the Crime Prevention Research Center earlier this year showed that 11.1 million Americans now carry concealed weapons, a significant increase from the 4.5 million in 2007. That same study showed that murder rates for that time period dropped from 5.6 to 4.4 per 100,000.
John R. Lott, president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, asserts that there is an inherent deterrent effect of concealed carry permits, noting that in 10 states, more than 8 percent of adults hold concealed carry permits, and all of those 10 are among the states with the lowest crime rates. Further, six states that do not require a permit to carry concealed weapons also have some of the lowest crime rates in the country.
The American people must continue to fight to protect their Second Amendment rights. Ambitious politicians will often use tragic news stories to make their case for gun control, while simultaneously enjoying the luxury of taxpayer-funded security, leaving their constituents to fend for themselves. That cannot and should not be tolerated.
Please share this on Facebook and Twitter if you believe the Second Amendment was put in place to allow citizens to defend themselves not only from common criminals but also from those who would seek to disarm law-abiding Americans.
